2pm
Grimes: Oblivion (Seeing her play in Hudson in September 2012 was cool. But not as fun as thinking about it and getting excited for it all summer.)
Major Lazer: Get Free
Father John Misty: Nancy From Now On (I like watching him perform. And it’s not just because of his awesome dance moves. But I like those, too!)
Lower Dens: Brains
Frankie Rose: Gospel / Grace (2012 will be the year of watching Frankie Rose fall in love with Albany. She played here twice and the second time she so easily declared how much she loved playing here. My heart melted from smiling.)
Sean Rowe: Downwind
Babe City: Wait Weight (So happy to have this as a favorite song. The people in this band are the reason I get excited about music in Albany.)
Thee Oh Sees: Flood’s New Light
Bahamas: Caught Me Thinking
Alabama Shakes: Hold On
Beach House: Myth
The Parlor: Tear Down The Coastline (They’re so great! And they’re from here!)
Tanlines: All Of Me
Shearwater: Animal Life (Their show at Helsinki Hudson will be one of my all-time favorites. I liked watching and listening to the lead singer transform himself on stage. His voice became power and it was as if he didn’t even have a body…just a voice.)
Horse Feathers: Last Waltz

3pm
Cat Power: Manhattan (Had to pick this because it goes in my collection of songs about cities and New York.)
Dr. John: Revolution
Damien Jurado: Working Titles (Sometimes I try not to listen to this album because I get worried that it will make me sad. But it never does. And this: “wrote about me on every new record, i’ll show up in a title of your song, i only hope somebody requests it.”)
Kelly Hogan: We Can’t Have Nice Things (I want to love this whole album. But I mostly love this song.)
Lord Huron: The Man Who Lives Forever (This song makes me think everything is going to be okay. Triumphany.)
Justin Townes Earle: Am I That Lonely Tonight?
Sharon Van Etten: Life of His Own (I’m still wrecked from seeing her perform at Rest Fest 2012.)
Sun Kil Moon: Young Love
The Tallest Man On Earth: To Just Grow Away
Taken By Trees: Only You
Twin Shadow: Five Seconds (This version is my 2012 slow jam. It really is.)
Poor Moon: Clouds Below
Michael Kiwanuka: Bones
The Antlers: Drift Dive (They were another favorite show at Helsinki Hudson. I listened to them non-stop for two weeks immediately starting after the concert ended. I can still listen and feel like I’m back hearing the songs live.)

12pm
Literature: The Girl, The Gold Watch, And Everything (Their show at The Low Beat was awesome, like being in some indie, jangle-pop heaven I never knew existed.)

Deerhoof: Paradise Girls
Sean Rowe: Desiree
Strand Of Oaks: Goshen ‘97
St. Vincent: Digital Witness
Avey Tare’s Slasher Flicks: Little Fang
Frankie Cosmos: Owen (This whole album is delightful.)
Fear Of Men: Green Sea
Warpaint: Disco//very (I can’t listen to this song just once, it’s gotta be at least two times in a row. And its perfect girl gang video is what really opened me up to the whole album.)

1pm
Jenny Lewis: Just One Of The Guys
Real Estate: Talking Backward
Bonnie “Prince” Billy: Night Noises
PHOX: Slow Motion
Temples: Keep In The Dark
Mac DeMarco: Passing Out Pieces
Mitski: First Love-Late Spring (Her album is already a classic. Kinda in the vein of Exile In Guyville. Yeah, I said that and I mean it! She’s definitely got something special going on, even The New York Times thinks so!)
José González: This Is How We Walk On The Moon (I really do like the original by Arthur Russell but this version adds some magic melancholy that makes it even more irresistible.
T.Rex: Cosmic Dancer (From 1971 but I only just heard it in November 2014. It came on while I was sitting in a sunbeam in Nashville and I had a few moments of crazy until I figured out who sang it so I could listen to it forever.)
Sylvan Esso: Hey Mami
Quilt: Eye of the Pearl
Sharon Van Etten: Every Time the Sun Comes Up
The Firs: Your White Dress (My most beautiful album of 2014. I can listen to it anytime and especially when I’d usually listen to Bon Iver’s “For Emma, Forever Ago”. A gem.)

Without WEXT, Hello Pretty City wouldn’t have a home. And without some very special people at WEXT, it wouldn’t happen at all. These five years have been so sweet thanks to Chris Wienk (radio mastermind extraordinaire and one of the most supportive and kind people I know), KTG (my beloved producer who makes the show sound so good), and Dave Delaney (my favorite radio voice and the best silent disco dancer in the Capital Region.)

Making this radio show is 100% of my sincerest love. Thank you for listening; it’s an honor and deep pleasure to share music with you. (This past December I talked about this in a TEDx talk I gave in Albany.)

Damien Jurado playing guitar, December 2013

2013 was the year I saw Damien Jurado live. In PARIS! In a really small black box theater called La Loge. I sat so close to him that I could see that he wears polka dotted socks. His new album comes out at the end of January. It could be a fave of 2014 :)

Today it’s like we’re listening to songs together 50 years from now! Because these are the songs I anticipate listening to and loving forever.

8:00am (+ 8:00pm!)

Haim: The Wire (I’m shocked that I included this but I know that whenever I hear it I’m going to think…I remember when that came out in 2013 and I didn’t want to like it but I did!)
The Blow: Make It Up
Cayucas: East Coast Girl (Total sucker for any song referencing my beloved east coast.)
Jake Bugg: Lightning Bolt (I almost didn’t include this song because of it’s extreme pop appeal but I double checked it’s awesomeness with this video and confirmed with myself that there’s something special to it.)
Bleached: Searching Through The Past (All year I’d play songs from this band knowing that I’d include them in this list.)
Phosphorescent: Ride On / Right On (Same with this song…I knew all year it would be one of my bests. I listened to it first thing one morning and it made me actually dance in bed.)
Valerie June: Workin’ Woman Blues (This was the song and album I listened to the most in 2013. And it only came out in July! I really, truly can’t wait for what she does next. Her Tiny Desk concert only deepened my awe of her.)
Okkervil River: Stay Young (Not so sure about loving this one forever but I know that I’ll be listening to Okkervil River albums for years to come so I’m including this because I know it will be a part of my life in some way.)
Foals: My Number
Eleanor Friedberger: Stare At The Sun (In a perfect world I would’ve played this whole album on today’s show. It’s one of my favorites of 2013 as a whole.)
Bombino: Amidinine
MaryLeigh Roohan: Coward (This song is so catchy that I dream of it being on top 40 radio all over the country.)
Shannon And The Clams: Hey Willy
Veronica Falls: Tell Me
Califone: Frosted Tips (Another song that really is just part of my list of best albums.)
Hand Habits: Mynt (This little album is a gem. I listen and enjoy it any time of day.)

9:00 (+ 9:00pm!)

Night Beds: Even If We Try
Foxygen: Shuggie (One of my favorite songs to sings along to.)
Camera Obscura: This Is Love (Feels Alright)
Cass McCombs: Brighter!
Sam Amidon: My Old Friend (His performance at the Troy Savings Bank Music Hall this past fall was my favorite show of the year. Even listening to his album gives me the same shudders and goose bumps I had that night. Keep your eye on All Over Albany this week for my full list of favorite shows of 2013.)
Rhye: Open
Devendra Banhart: Never Seen Such Good Things
Willy Mason: Talk Me Down
Magnolia Electric Co.: Don’t Fade On Me (This song didn’t come out this year. It came out in 2006. It’s here because the lead singer isn’t any more, he died in 2013. It’s not often that I feel the absence of a singer as much I feel with him.)
James Blake: Retrograde
Soko: I Just Want To Make It New With You
Denison Witmer: Keep Moving Brother, Keep Moving Sister
Jim Guthrie: The Sound Of Wanting More (This whole album is so fantastic that it was hard to pick just one song to play. Definitely a new classic in my life.)
